What is hypopituitarism?

The pituitary gland is a small gland located at the base of the brain that impacts functions throughout the body. When the gland doesn’t produce enough needed hormones, this is known as hypopituitarism. These hormones are related to growth, puberty, thyroid, sugar control, blood pressure among others.

What causes hypopituitarism?

Stroke, brain surgery, tumors or head injuries can cause hypopituitarism. It can also be congenital or occur as a complication of a number of other medical conditions.

What are the symptoms of hypopituitarism?

Hypopituitarism can cause fatigue, weight loss, lack of growth, lack of puberty, low sugar, decreased appetite, anemia, and a number of other different symptoms.

What are hypopituitarism care options?

Hormone replacement therapy might be indicated as treatment of hypopituitarism. Surgery or radiation therapy to remove a tumor, if necessary/depending on the case.
